How Many Bar Stools Do I Need? Ideal Spacing Tips
Figuring out how many bar stools you can fit in a designated space can be confusing. To do this you need to take into account the following things

Simply, the answer will always be different – it depends on various factors. You need to ask yourself some questions before you decide. How big is the living space? How many people live in the home? How often will you use the bar stools? To make it easy for you, we’ve put together a list of important questions. Answer these to determine how many bar stools you need for your kitchen or breakfast bar.
How wide is the average bar stool?
On average a barstool has an approx. seat width of 40cm. If you choose a stool with arms this will take the seat width to around 50cm .
How far apart should I space my bar stools?
You should space your stools roughly 20cm apart from each other at the breakfast bar or counter. This allows you free movement and easy access in and out. However, if you think you might need more room than the average person or you have a small household, you might want to increase this distance! Ultimately, it’s up to you but we recommend a minimum of 20cm.
How Many Bar Stools Should I get
There are 2 ways to work out how many bar stools you can get. If you know you have to have 4 stools, as you have 4 family members we would recommend the following method
Length of Counter Top % Amount of Bar Stools you need. This will give you the amount of space you have per stool.
You will then need to work out how much of this space is for the stool and how much is for mounting and dismounting.
Space per Person – 20cm (For mounting and dismounting) this will then leave you with the space you have for the stools themselves.
If you already have a specific bar stool in mind you can use the width to work out how many you can fit within a designated space.
- Work out the length of your Counter Top and the width of your Bar Stool
- Add 20cm to the width of the stool to allow for mounting and dismounting space
- Divide the length of the countertop by the New Bar Stool Width (Width + 20cm)
- Round the Answer down to the nearest Whole Number- This is how many stools you can have within this space
